Description
Octogen (HMX), chemically known as cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C4H8N8O8. It is a high explosive, a white crystalline powder, existing in four crystal forms: α, β, γ, and δ, but the β form, which is stable at room temperature, is used in practice. It has a melting point of 281℃ and a density of 1.96 g/cm³. It is non-hygroscopic, and its detonation velocity, thermal stability, and chemical stability all exceed those of RDX, making it one of the most explosive single-element high explosives. However, it has higher mechanical sensitivity than RDX, a higher melting point, and is more expensive to produce, making it difficult to use alone. Currently, it is only used in a few missile warhead charges, anti-tank charges, rocket propellant additives, and as a detonating charge for nuclear weapons.

Scientific name: Cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (CRTM), a top-tier high-energy explosive for military use, superior to RDX in energy, density, and thermal stability.

I. Main Military Applications

High-end Missile Warheads: Main charge for air-to-air missiles, surface-to-air missiles, anti-tank missiles, and cruise missiles, possessing extremely high destructive power.

Precision-Guided Munitions: Charges for smart bombs, terminally guided munitions, and penetrator-blast integrated munitions, resistant to high temperatures and impacts, and not prone to sympathetic detonation.

Nuclear Weapon Initiating Explosives: Core charge for primary detonation in nuclear weapons, the highest-grade high-energy initiating explosive for military use.
Armor-Piercing Projectiles/Shaped Charges: Shaped charge warheads for heavy armor-piercing projectiles and bunker-buster projectiles, with penetration depth exceeding TNT and RDX.
Depth-Sea Bombs and Mines: Underwater high-explosive charges, with extremely high underwater detonation energy utilization.
Aerospace and Military Applications: Rocket separation charges, aerospace pyrotechnics, attitude-adjusting initiating agents.
Special Pyrotechnics: Military high-strength detonators, detonating cords, detonating charge charges, and delayed-action initiation agents.
High-Temperature Resistant Military Explosives: Specific explosives for high-altitude, high-temperature combat environments; not prone to spontaneous combustion or detonation.

II. Mixed Explosive Applications:
Made with TNT to create HTX series military mixed explosives;
Made high-powered plastic military explosives;
Main formula for military-grade press-fit explosives and high-end cast ammunition.

III. Very Limited Civilian Applications (Extremely Strict Control):
Only used in a very limited number of high-end deep oil well perforations and special geological blasting applications; entirely controlled domestically, private trading is strictly prohibited.
Core Advantages: Highest detonation velocity, best thermal stability, low mechanical sensitivity, and high safety; it is a top-tier, mainstay high-energy explosive currently in service with the military.
